https://sightwords.com/sight-words/lessons/ - Teaching strategies for use with your child as they are learning the sight words.
Reading Practice:
1) Using the 'Libby' app you can link to a wide variety of books through the local Gaynor Family Regional Library in Selkirk.
Use your library account number. Even though the library is presently closed for access you can contact staff by phone for help with getting an account number if you do not have one already.
Here is their website link: https://www.gfrl.org/main.asp?fxoid=FXMenu,3&cat_ID=4&sub_ID=302
2) YouTube has books that a variety of authors read aloud. You can pick one and view it with your child. Then turn off the volume the next day and have your child read it out loud to you. Encourage some expression and remind them to 'stretch out' those words when they reach a difficult word. Here is the link to a book called 'The Bad Seed' to get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWjW2lTMMiA Encourage some discussion about the moral of the story or the main idea, discuss the pictures and what information the images convey. Re-reading is a great way to build fluency and improve the ease with which you/ your child recognizes the words.
3) Refer to our school librarian's website link on the school web page. Mrs. Merkel has a list of other links for online books.
'Words their Way' Word Sorts: Help with spelling patterns.

2) What are CVC / CVCe/ CVVC words? The C represents the word 'consonant' - all the letters of the alphabet that are not vowels. The V represents the word 'vowel' - the vowels are a/e/i/o/u.
- CVC word families like the -at family: rat/ cat/ hat/ sat/ etc., are important for grade one and two students to learn and practice creating, spelling, reading and recognizing. Dr. Seuss books are great for reinforcing many word families. Look online, there are many YouTube videos also available.
- CVCe word families are important for students to recognize as the 'e' at the end of the word changes the vowel sound to a long vowel; the vowel will 'say its name!'
- CVVC words have two vowels in the middle. These can be tricky as there can be 'oddball' words that don't follow the rules and so we can't always say that 'when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking'. There are exceptions that we often label as 'oddball words'. Examples: bear, good, noise, and friend. Here's a link that helps explain why we shouldn't teach that little saying.
